The Sierra Club welcomes all those concerned about the need for a
healthy environment. If you are concerned about breathable air, drinkable & swimmable water,
the dangers of pesticides, or preservation of our wild open spaces,
won't you please join us?
As a member, you will receive Sierra Magazine (the national magazine of the
Sierra Club), the state chapter's newsletter, Sierra Atlantic,
and your local group's newsletter. Membership will keep
you informed of the many social programs, conservation and outings
activities and educational efforts sponsored by the state chapter and the local groups, as well as those of the national organization
Our educational and lobbying efforts are addressed to public
officials and legislators. We make our voices heard through volunteer lobbying, grass roots organizing,
letters, postcards and telephone calls from our members, and, as a
last resort, litigation.
Our efforts have resulted in creation of a state Environmental
Protection Fund, stronger protection and expansion of Adirondack Park
and Catskill Forest Preserve, efforts to establish an Oswegatchie
Canoe Wilderness in the Adirondack Park, establishment of the right to
recreational navigation of rivers lying within private
lands, preservation of much of Sterling Forest near NYC, important
Environmental Justice initiatives in New York City and Albany,
grass-roots efforts to protect the Hudson River from the perils
of PCB's, and a major effort for stronger protection of New York
City's environmentally-sensitive watershed lands and wetlands.
Why is the Sierra Club so effective? There are some 650,000
members nationwide and 32,000 statewide organized into an informed activist network. We
have up-to-date information on the issues; we work with legislators on
Federal level, as well as on the local level. We have our headquarters
in San Francisco, our main lobbying offices in Washington, DC, and
staff working in state capitals around the nation.
There's a Sierra Club group near you. For social gatherings,
for informative educational programs, for outings, for volunteer
conservation work, please join now. Just click here. By applying for
membership through our web site, you will be donating a portion of your dues directly to the Atlantic Chapter.
