A Resolution of the Niagara Group of
the Sierra Club
in Opposition
to
Rezoning for CWM Expansion
Whereas, the Town of
Porter is considering a rezoning request from Chemical Waste management (CWM),
And, whereas this rezoning would allow CWM to expand and
continue its operations in the Town of Porter,
And, whereas failure to rezone will cause the present CWM
facility to become full and close possibly within 10 years,
And, whereas
Western New York already has received more than its share of toxic
wastes, and does not need to know as a toxic waste dumping ground,
And, whereas 220 trucks per day deliver wastes to CWM and
there is always the possibility of accidental spills,
And, whereas CWM is located near Lake Ontario from which many localities take their drinking
water, and is also located in an area where a geological fault exists, so that
the risk of an earthquake is higher than in some other locations,
And, whereas no
amount of money offered to the Town of Porter by CWM is as important as factors
of health, safety and a pleasant and wholesome environment,
Therefore, be it
resolved that the public good if best served if the Town of Porter rejects
this rezoning request, CWM is allowed to close and no more toxic wastes are
brought into the Town of Porter.
