When a Park Becomes a Private Real Estate Project
When:
May 30, 2008
6:30 - 8:30 PM
Details:
When a Public Park Becomes a Private Real Estate Project: An Expose of the Self Sustaining Park Paradigm, and What Citizens Can Do Friday, May 30, 6:30 - 8:30 PM Judson Hall, Washington Square South
Judi Francis, President of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Defense Fund and Roy Sloane, Civic Activist, former member of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Local Development Corporation and current Vice President of the Cobble Hill Association, will present the current plans for Brooklyn Bridge Park. They will outline how the notion of "self sustaining" changed the design and intent of this public park, with
private uses -- luxury condominiums - driving out public park uses. They will offer suggestions for changing the "self sustaining" paradigm, with insights and lessons learned from other public park projects across the nation.
They request that all concerned citizens write to their local assembly and state senate representatives (Joan Milman and Martin Connor, respectively, for Brooklyn Bridge Park) to ask them to halt the current park plan for Brooklyn Bridge Park and consider alternatives to housing for this Park. We also urge non-Brooklynites to write to state legislators asking them to sponsor legislation barring private housing from being erected inside of any future or current public park.
