Candidates Get Environmental Seal of Approval
Sierra Club Announces New Round of Endorsements
Washington, DC: In continuing efforts to tell Americans which candidates
they can trust to stand up for the environment, the Sierra Club today
announced a new round of candidates who've earned its endorsement for
election to the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. The environment
is shaping up to be a deciding factor in several key races, as the best
hope for defending our air, water and land from pollution and destruction
lies in the House and Senate.
This round of endorsements includes several close races where the
environment is an especially prominent issue. Those endorsements include:
Senate: Jean Carnahan (D-MO), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Robert Torricelli
(D-NJ)
House open seats: Raul Grijalva (AZ-07-D), Mike Feeley (CO-07-D), Jill Long
Thompson (IN-02-D), Martha Fuller Clark (NH-01-D), Dario Herrera (NV-03-D)
and Dan Wofford (PA-06-D).
House challengers: Katrina Swett (NH-02-D) and Richard Romero (NM-01-D)
House incumbents: Nancy Johnson (CT-05-R) and Jim Maloney (CT-05-D), Connie
Morella (MD-08-R), Dario Herrera (NV-03-D) and Tim Holden (PA-17-D).

"We're proud to say these candidates can be trusted to fight for the clean
air, clean water and special places that Americans care about," said
Margaret Conway, Sierra Club's Political Director. "Sierra Club members
will be working in their communities to elect these and other
pro-environmental candidates. We're committed to caring for the land that
we love, and to do that we must build pro-environment majorities in the
House and Senate."
The House and Senate have become increasingly important to environmental
protection at a time when Americans feel a special connection to our
country and the Bush Administration stands poised to weaken clean air
standards and make taxpayers foot the bill for cleaning up toxic messes
created by corporate polluters.
"In November, voters will make clear choices: between responsible
candidates who will stand up for our health, our safety, and our families,
or those who cater to big corporate interests at our families' expense,"
said Conway. "As Americans learn how energy companies influenced the Bush
Administration's policies, people are increasingly leery of politicians who
do the bidding of big corporate polluters, and they want to know who they
can trust."
