RE: Saving River Bend Nature Park and Riverton Golf Course
Oppose Assembly Bill A9120 - Assemblyman Joe Errigo
Our Sierra Club Albany lobbyist has informed us that the bill authorizing the
sale of Riverton / River Bend Park in Henrietta may come up for vote at any
time. We need to save these rare, public Genesee Riverfront acres.
Please call the below local Assembly legislators and ask them to oppose
A9120.
Bill Title: "An act to authorize the town of Henrietta to sell ... Riverton
Golf Course and associated park lands."
RATIONAL FOR OPPOSITION
1) Assembly Bill A9120 contradicts State and Local River Front Preservation
Efforts.
Many sensible New York State and regional efforts have been made to preserve
and enlarge public access to the Genesee River. This proposal by the James
Breese administration in Henrietta runs counter to public intent, logic and
future conservation directions which are trying to preserve and enlarge public
lands beside major NYS rivers. Examples: The Genesee Greenway Trail and
Preservation of Genesee Valley Park.
2) Bill permits a looting of taxpayers investment.
Assembly Bill A9120 will authorize looting Federal, State and Henrietta
taxpayers
by selling the Riverton Golf Course development at 88% below its adjusted
cash cost.
In 1973 the Federal and State governments spent the equivalent of $3,600,000
to develop these park and recreation areas. The Breese Administration proposes
to sell the area for $450,000.
3) Bill fails to preserve public river front or public access.
Assembly Bill A9120 does not preserve the 50' Genesee River easement, which
had been a hiking/biking path, nor does it preserve public access to the river
front.
4) More public parkland needed - not less.
Henrietta needs to add fully funded new parklands - not sell a fully develop
public park.
Although the Bill proposes to use the proceeds of the sale to buy new lands
for future park use - why sell a fully developed water front park for
unspecified possible future parkland?
5) No new 18 hole golf course.
Originally the proposal was to sell the 9 hole Riverton Golf Course so
private interests could develop a profitable 18 hole course, but there has been
no further mention of this proposal. There is no land sale in the area pending.
Some of the acres originally considered now have houses built on them. A new 18
hole course is being built elsewhere.

TOWN ASSET ON THE GENESEE RIVER
