State Fish Hatchery and the Town Park
South Otselic, NY
Saturday, May 19, 2012
Come
visit our table at this year's event. We will be recruiting volunteers
to participate in The Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter's water monitoring
program in conjunction with The Alliance of Aquatic Resource Monitoring
(ALLARM) out of Dickinson College to monitor streams and waterways in
NY regions impacted by hydrofracking (see below for details.)
South
Otselic's Fishing Heritage Day typically includes two fishing clinics
for upwards of 200 kids of all ages, as well as exhibits and tours in
the state fish hatchery. Nearby, at the Town Park, arts, crafts
and antiques are displayed and sold, while across the street, the
former Gladding Fishing Line Co., once the oldest and largest fishing
line company in the world, demonstrates one of their vintage rope
braiding machines, and sells a selection of their rope products.
Other educational exhibits, as well as music by local musicians,
are featured in the Town Park. Local non-profit organizations
sell food, and local students assist with trash pickup, fish stocking
and assisting vendors, while the South Otselic Central School provides
free bus shuttle transportation throughout the day between the fish
hatchery and the Town Park. During each of its first three years,
Fishing Heritage Day has attracted hundreds of people. The event
is supported by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation,
including the South Otselic Fish Cultural Station and their office in
Cortland, NY. The Chenango and Otsego Chapters of Trout Unlimited
and Gladding Braided Products, LLC. were major partners as well. In
addition, dozens of other area sponsors support the event.
Fishing Heritage Day is by far, the largest public event in the
hamlet of South Otselic, and arguably, in its history. Visit http://www.ovfish.org for more information.
