Memorandum of Support
In Assembly 1846 by Assemblyman Grannis
Title: An Act to amend the energy law, in relation to state lighting efficiency standards for existing public buildings
Provisions:
A.1846 proposes that elimination of wasteful outdoor lighting be included in the list of purposes to be accomplished by New York’s lighting efficiency standards for existing public buildings.
Statement of Support:
Inefficient lighting continues to be a significant component of New York’s demand for electricity. When the state established lighting efficiency standards for public buildings wasteful outdoor lighting, i.e. lighting that illuminates areas other than those that need to be lighted, was not considered. Outdoor lighting that illuminates areas that don’t need to be lighted, like the sky, or neighboring properties, requires more energy than lighting that is limited to only those areas that need to be lighted. If A.1846 is passed into law, outdoor lighting on public buildings will be required to be more efficient, saving energy and reducing the burden on the tax payers who pay ultimately pay the energy bills for public buildings.
